III. The Mirror of the Well (Freedom vs. Hidden Shame)
Like the woman at the well, we all carry thirsts and secrets. This mirror helps us see past the surface to the “jars” we carry that weigh us down.
The Scripture: John 4:5-42 (The Woman at the Well)
“So he came to a city of Samaria, called Sychar… Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being tired from his journey, sat down by the well… A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, ‘Give me a drink.’ … Jesus answered her, ‘If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.’ … Jesus answered her, ‘Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never thirst again; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.’ … The woman said to him, ‘Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet…’ The woman left her water pot, and went away into the city, and said to the people, ‘Come, see a man who told me everything that I did. Can this be the Christ?’ … Many of the Samaritans of that city believed in him because of the word of the woman… They said to the woman, ‘Now we believe, not because of your speaking; for we have heard for ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Savior of the world.’”
Scripture Contemplation
- The Conversation: Jesus asks for a drink to begin a conversation about the woman’s life. If Jesus sat with you today, what “thirsts” or secrets would you be most hesitant to discuss with Him?
- The Water: Reflect on the “living water” that Jesus promises will become a spring within. How often do you bypass this internal spring to return to “jars”—habits, addictions, or grudges—that always leave you thirsty?
- The Departure: The woman eventually leaves her water pot behind to follow her new calling. What specific “jar” are you carrying right now that is too heavy for the freedom Jesus is offering you?
The Journey of Transparency
Am I hiding parts of my life from God, like the woman at the well hiding her past? This mirror invites us to bring our hidden shame into the light of Christ.
The Journey of Satisfaction
We look at our habits. Do I keep returning to “jars” (habits, addictions, or grudges) that never truly satisfy my thirst? We recognise that these repeated returns only leave us thirstier.
The Journey of Release
The call here is to leave the weight behind. Am I willing to “leave my jar behind”—to drop a specific sin or attachment—to follow Christ more freely?
Prayer
My God, I firmly intend, with your help, to avoid whatever leads me to sin. I am tired of carrying these “jars” of habits and grudges that do not satisfy. Give me the courage to leave my jar behind and live in Your freedom. Amen.
Personal Action: The Way of Freedom
- The “Release”: Identify one “jar” (a specific habit or grudge) and consciously choose to leave it behind today to follow Christ.
