Before we look into the specific mirrors of the coming weeks, we must lay three foundations based on Ash Wednesday’s Gospel:
1. The Journey of Dependence
(Humility vs. Pride)
Lent challenges our pride. We must ask: Do I acknowledge my dependence on God, or do I live as if I am the centre of my own universe? Ash Wednesday reminds us that our faith is not a self-contained orbit, but a reliance on the Creator who breathed life into the dust.
2. The Journey of Hunger
(Nourishment vs. Distraction)
We look at what we consume to fill the void. Have I been trying to satisfy my soul’s hunger with things that cannot sustain me—like status, screens, or material goods? We must determine if we are truly nourishing our souls or merely distracting our appetites.
3. The Journey of Honesty
(Truth vs. Pretence)
This is a call to clear vision. Have I been honest with myself about my faults, or have I turned a blind eye to my own reality? We are called to stop hiding from the truth of who we are

whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.
